Open Access and the Art Library

This presentation was made to my Art Librarianship class. It argues that Open Access is vital to the globalization of art history scholarship. It has long been a goal to counter to euro-centric narrative of art history that has dominated the art history surveys. Locking articles behind pay-walls prevents our colleagues world-wide from accessing articles. Open Access publishing is often an inexpensive way for scholars to publish in impoverished countries. If US scholars are only looking at commercial journals and the global community at open access, there is a scholarly communication breakdown. Helping art historians make their work open access as well as teaching them to find open access resources will be a key task of art librarians.
